Over the years I have seen many knee problems and very often my clients have avoided the need for surgery. Knee pain can be very easy to fix.
One of my clients had such bad knees she was in pain all of the time and could hardly bend them at all. She had come to see me about her bad back which we resolved and then asked me if I could have a look at he knees because they were ‘killing her’. Her knees were so painful and restricted that she had just spend hundreds of dollars raising all of her toilets in the house because she could not get down or back up from the toilets at their current height.
I checked her knees doing all of the orthopaedic exams to see which would initiate pain and then checked for the accessory movements. This is the secret to many knee problems I have seen! A lack of accessory movement.
You see, in order for a joint to flex or extend it must also ‘slide’. This is what is known as the accessory movement. It is vitally important and very often overlooked! I checked her knees and there was very little of these movements. She was having trouble bending her knees more than 90 degrees without a knife-like pain searing into her knee joints. In less than 2 minutes she was bending her knees 80% better without any pain! Another treatment 3 days later and she had restored her knee flexion to normal. The only sensation she had now was a stretch in the thighs which I told her was perfectly normal. Her thigh muscles hadn’t needed to stretch this far for years because her knee joints wouldn’t allow it. Unfortunately, she now had a house full of toilets that were higher than necessary and she was a few hundred dollars lighter for the work they had done.
- Some tips: here are a few tips that are very important if you suffer from knee pain or not.
- Make sure that you walk with your feet facing forwards, not turned in or out.
- Walk with the pressure on the soles of your feet not on your arches. This is extremely important! Many people allow their bodyweight to fall into the arches instead of lifting their arches slightly allowing the pressure to come off the inside of the knee. This does not mean however that you are walking on the outsides of your soles either.
- When you bend and pick things up make sure your weight is into the heels of your feet-not over your toes. This will help you avoid squashing your knee joints every time and your knees will feel much better for it. Also you will be building up your thigh muscles which will also help your knees.
- There are other important things that you can do to help your knees even further.
