Why do you have Neck Pain?

Posted by in Neck Pain Essentials | 0 comments

First of all I want you to know that neck and upper back pain are generally easy to fix. By learning why you are having pain in the first place we can then set about teaching you how to fix your pain and prevent it from happening in the future. Sound simple? It is.

The next time you have a look around an office building, a building site, a school, and a bus stop, on a train or wherever. You will see people slouching in their seats, slouching over their computers, lifting with bent backs and doing a wide range of daily tasks using bad posture.  These same people will also more than likely be suffering from back, neck and/or shoulder pain (or all three). They may have constant pain or suffer from ongoing bouts of recurrent pain.  They will probably then go to get treatment from a chiropractor, a physiotherapist or a masseur or if these don’t work perhaps an acupuncturist. They may try a yoga class, or the gym or Pilates and try to strengthen and stretch their muscles only to find that their pain comes back. How can this be they ask? The great mystery really is no mystery. As I have mentioned before, treating your own neck pain and making sure it does not come back is easy, you just need to know how. The vast majority of neck pain is from poor posture! If you continue to slouch at your chairs, or at the computer, or whilst you eat, or continue to lift poorly or stand poorly you will not have removed the cause of your pain and thus remain in pain.

Todays’ Neck Pain Exercises Tip

When you drive your car its very easy to slouch in your seat. This is very bad on both your back and your neck. Therefore, put a small cushion behind your lower back and also adjustt your rear view mirror slightly higher. By lifting your mirror it will keep you sitting slightly higher in your seat to see what’s behind you and cause you to remain in  better posture.

Neck pain, Degenerative Joint Disease and your Xrays

Posted by in Neck Pain Essentials |

A client  came to me and showed me his Xrays. He had neck pain and felt doomed because it showed that he had degeneration in his joints. He was resigned to the fact that he would have to live with pain because of this degeneration. How wrong he was!

I told him that 90-95% of people over the age of 60 have degeneration in their neck to some degree but of course most of these people do not suffer from neck pain. The link between degenerative joints and discs and pain is very limited. Every day throughout the world people have xrays and MRIs showing joints that have been worn but have no pain whatsoever.

Just like your car, certain things get worn after using them for a long time. The major problem with your neck is that you cant just go and get spare parts for it( not yet anyway). What you must do is make sure that you minimize the amount of  damage to your body through diet, lifestyle and posture.

When it comes to your neck,  the most damaging thing that you can do to your neck is sit and stand  all day with a forward head posture. This is the major cause of neck pain and also why so many of my clients who have stopped doing this have become pain free regardless of their joints degeneration. This is because they were aggravating their necks by continually using bad posture which continually strained their soft tissues and discs.

My 5 top tips to avoid having neck pain from driving

Posted by in Neck Pain quick tips | 0 comments

It’s very common for people to suffer from neck pain when they drive, especially if they have to drive for a long time. The last thing you want is to drive for 10 hours to go on your holiday vacation and you wake up the next day and cant turn your neck.

Here are my 5 top tips to avoid having neck pain from driving

  1. Good posture- if you sit in your seat slouched over the steering wheel you will probably not only have neck pain but also back pain as well. Therefore put a small cushion or rolled up towel behind your lower back to get your lower back in good postural position. Remember, its imp[ossible to have good neck posture if you have bad lower back posture-good neck posture starts at your lower back
  2. Bring your backrest up. The days of you with your backrest sat wayyyy back are over-no more low riding. This does not mean however that you are to have your seat so far forward that you are squashed up against your steering wheel. It’s a happy medium. Just bring your  seat slightly more vertical and this will help you avoid craning your neck into a forward head position( your enemy number 1)
  3. Take regular breaks. Even good posture needs a break, not to mention, its good for you to get out and have some fresh air to freshen up mentally as well. Stretch your hands to the sky and do some deep breaths. This will help oxygenate your blood stream and at the same time decompress your spine.
  4. Lift your rear view mirror slightly higher than you need it. This will help you sit tall throughout the journey rather than slouch
  5. If you need to crane your head forward to see through the windshield you probably need glasses to help you see when your driving-or you need your windscreen washed. Either way, driving with a forward head posture is what you must avoid to have a happy healthy neck when you arrive at your destination

Happy travels!
